Moving Overseas? How To Plan And Prepare

Moving overseas has to be the most stressful experience any of us can ever go through. If you're about to undertake an international removal and you need help, you've come to the right place!

Before we get started, understand that moving overseas doesn't have to be a nightmare at all. There are several things you can do to make your move smooth and hassle free. They are: Planning and Preparation. Plan ahead - and make your preparations based on your planning. And the sooner you plan, the more prepared you'll be. Simple!

Planning Your Move

Loading and unloading when moving overseas can take up to a few weeks, so it's important you don't pack anything you'll need. Pack all your essentials in a separate luggage bag.

Part two of planning your move is of course choosing an international removal company. And here you have to be very careful - and you will need to spend a bit more to get the very best. After all, what's the point in using a slightly cheaper, less experienced company if they lose or break your precious goods?

Understand that there are some very professional, very experienced companies out there who specialise in international removals. These are the companies to get quotes from. So - for your own sake - DO NOT look for the cheapest quote. You have been warned!

Trust me, when it comes to international removals, only the best in the business will do. A good way to compare companies is to get references. But don't get sucked in to calling a company's "golden references" - these are references they keep on file from highly satisfied customers - instead, ask to speak to the last ten people whom the company moved internationally. If the company refuses to do this for you, they're not worth your time (or money).

Preparing To Move

One of the first things you'll need to do is to pack. Now, unless you're on a tight budget, it's not recommended to pack yourself. And here's why. Boxes labelled "PBO," (Packed by Owner) are almost always targeted by Customs officers.

When you're ready to get the packing done, make a list of what you need to take. Don't waste your money by taking things you don't need and could possibly buy cheaper in your new country. Especially electrical appliances which may not even work in the new country.

Next, check with the IRD to see if there are any tax deductions you or your employer can claim for removal expenses. You'll also need to make a list of people and organisations you'll need to notify of your move. (See The Moving Checklist for a full list.)

One other important thing to make sure of is that you receive any vaccinations you need in your new country. Also, it's important to visit your GP and ask for your medical history and any other forms your new GP will need. Lastly, if you're considering medical insurance, now is the time to set it up - not after you move overseas!
