Packing Tips

15 Packing Tips To Help When You’re Moving House

  • Before you start packing make sure you get all the supplies you need:
  • Strong Boxes
  • Marking Pen
  • Tissue & Bubble Wrap
  • Tape & Scissors
  • Newspaper can be great for padding but the ink can rub off onto fabrics and surfaces.
  • When you’re ready to start, remember to only pack one room at a time. It’s also important to label each box so you know what it contains and what rooms it’s going to. Also, remember to label boxes with fragile items.
  • When taping boxes make sure they close properly. Boxes that sag at the bottom are likely to break – a headache you don’t need. As a rule of thumb, don’t pack more than 20 kgs into each box.
  • Heavier items should be packed at the bottom and lighter items on top.
  • Keep boxes from the same rooms together.
  • Use soft clothing and bedding as padding in boxes to prevent damage to fragile, plastic and electrical goods.
  • Keep clothing in dresser drawers.
  • Try use the original boxes for electronic equipment, especially your TV. Protect electrical goods with bubble wrap or polystyrene.
  • Pack medicines in a leak proof container.
  • Label boxes with essentials as “Last In, First Out”.
  • If you dismantle furniture, make sure you tape the nuts and bolts to the underside of furniture. Don't apply tape directly to polished or painted wood finishes. The tape could damage the surfaces.
  • Keep the tools you need to assemble your furniture separately and take them in the car with you.
  • Don’t pack your most important records. Take these with you in your car.
  • Keep pillows and cushions separate and handy. They can be used as padding for electrical items like your TV and stereo.
